Work Experience in Canada
Dense forests, the lofty Rocky mountains with breathtaking ski slopes, vast lakes perfect for canoeing, a wide variety of animals, colourful Native Canadian cultures, modern cosmopolitan cities, and a language selection of English and French – Canada offers all of this and much more! Whether you’re a trendy urban dweller or a complete nature enthusiast, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Canada.
My year in Canada was absolutely fantastic!
“I spent most of my time in and around Vancouver and in Victoria. It’s not surprising that Vancouver is voted one of the top three most beautiful cities in the world every year. I also went on a seven-day adventure trip through the Canadian Rockies. Absolutely amazing – these mountains really are impressive, especially for someone from flat North Germany like me…
Applying for jobs was pretty easy. My membership in WWOOF, organised by TravelWorks, helped. I was unbelievably lucky with my host family on the farm, and even celebrated Christmas with them. It's easy to get a full time day job in Victoria. I just walked down the shopping streets and handed out applications. I then worked for ‘Stormtech’, an outdoor clothing shop, as a salesperson. My last job in a meat shop was a real stroke of luck. My colleagues were all young and we often went out partying at night. It’s difficult to sum up everything I experienced in words.
In Canada, I was standing on my own two feet for the very first time. I had to organise myself completely but Travel Works and their local partner organisation were ready for me in the background, as a kind of safety net. If you don’t plan sensibly and don’t watch your spending, you suddenly end up with nothing. The jobs I had weren’t just good for earning money, but were also a huge source of fun. In total, I’d say that Canada was simply fantastic – nothing can take away from the things I experienced, as far as life experience, fun, and independence are concerned!”

Canada was brilliant!
“Canada was brilliant! I stayed in Vancouver for the first week to do some sightseeing, and then I went to Tofino, where I worked for 6 weeks as a housekeeper in a motel. Then I worked on various farms.
During the WWOOF programme, I was able to gain a lot of interesting experience in the biological cultivation of various vegetable, fruit and herbs. Among other things, I learned to cultivate a field using a stud horse, and I also got to know lots of lovely people! My average working day lasted 4 – 7 hours. Sometimes my work consisted of hours of strawberry picking in the Alberta sun, and sometimes my main job was walking with water buffalos…
I was able to enjoy the beauty and vastness of Canada for a long time, and really got my money’s worth as a nature lover in all regions – from the Pacific Rim National Park rainforests to the Rocky Mountains, down to the endless prairies around Calgary – amazing!”
