As a TravelWorks volunteer you can work in the different countries of Latin America, Africa and Asia as well as in Russia, in the fields of social work, education/culture and health/medicine. There are also opportunities for animal and nature lovers in South Africa.

Live and work together with the local people and make a contribution to improving living conditions or local nature protection whilst at the same time learning a great deal about the country, culture and people, as well as yourself!

What can you expect from voluntary work abroad?

Whether you are working as a teacher in a school in Thailand, a national park ranger on the coast of Costa Rica, a voluntary health worker in South Africa or looking after children in Argentina – your work will be highly appreciated everywhere, even if it is only a small contribution that you can make without any prior training. Please do not expect to be able to completely change the conditions of the country you are working in. As a guest in another culture, it is probably not wanted that you make European-style changes anyway.

You will also have plenty of time to get to know your host country during your stay:

• Visit local markets and sights, national parks, beaches and surrounding cities
• Trekking tours
• Sociable evenings with other TravelWorkers and backpackers from all over the world
• Perhaps also a visit to a neighbouring country

The opportunities are there – go and make the most of them!

Please observe the following:

Voluntary work is not really work experience in a specialist subject. You will be well integrated in a team of local workers but there will, nevertheless, hardly ever be a fixed work schedule, regular feedback talks or similar during your stay. Depending on the country, you may not receive work instructions either. If in doubt, therefore, please always ask how you can help and what you should do.

As the project placements and also the accommodation are often in very poor regions or city districts, the safety, health and infrastructure standards will not be what you are used to at home. Therefore, it is essential that you have the ability to adapt as well as a high degree of personal responsibility, independence and flexibility.

You will be a guest in a country which will usually be very different to any in western Europe and you will live and work there in the normal local conditions. TravelWorks co-operates, very consciously, with local partner organisations to offer you a stay which is as authentic as possible. We therefore accept that many things will be very different to how they are in European countries and you should do the same.
