In children’s daycare centres, you will care for children, feed them, play with them, or help them with their homework. You will assist with various medical studies and help the children to improve their motor-abilities through sport exercises and games.
Aside from this, you can also work in special education camps for children from poor backgrounds, or volunteer as a tutor. You could also work with orphaned children or girls and women, teaching them computer skills.
Report from Goa
“I was in Goa in India, where I worked in an orphanage and in a daycare centre. I played and made crafts with the children in the home, and I taught basic English in the daycare centre, including the ABCs and numbers from 1 to 20. I worked 3 hours each day, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. My time abroad was one of the best experiences of my life! The time went by way too fast!” - Linda Wiener
In schools, you will teach English and maths, tutor students, encourage children’s creativity (for example, through playing, painting, making crafts, and singing), prepare instructional materials, help the children improve their hygiene, and making regular medical check-ups, working with local doctors and hospitals.
In the field of healthcare, you will have the opportunitiy to help in a local nursing home. You will plan free-time activities for the residents, including reading to them or playing card games. You will also help the staff members with the personal hygiene of the residents.
Your help is also needed in AIDS centres. Here you can care for patients, assist nurses, offer awareness training, and visit communities, among other tasks. If you would like to work in the AIDS centre, this is only possible if you make a prior enquiry and if you are staying for a minimum of 8 weeks.
