Volunteer work in Ecuador
As its name slyly suggests, Ecuador lies directly on the equator, in the north-west corner of South America.
Hardly any other country allows you to travel through so many different impressive landscapes within such a short time: in the west, the mangrove-bordered Pacific coast with its beautiful sandy beaches, in the east the Amazon basin, lovingly called the “Oriente” with its almost impenetrable jungle.
The two plateaus are separated in the centre of the country by a mighty doubled range of mountains, the Cordillera Real. On average, these mountains “only” reach a height of 3000 m, and yet there are over 20 volcanoes in the north, among them the highest active volcano in the world with a height of 5897 m.
Despite its position on the Equator, the climate fluctuates greatly. Dependent on the height above sea level, a region may be subject to a moderate or tropical to subtropical climate.
