Travel stories from Zambia
Zambia, a landlocked country at the heart of South Africa, offers rich wildlife and landscapes, a fascinating culture, and friendly people, who will make you want to stay forever. The South Luangwa National Park:
- takes up 9000 km² of Zambia
- is called “the greatest wildlife sanctuary in the world”
- ...and is home to 400 kinds of birds and 60 other animal species.
As rich as Zambia is in terms of culture and wildlife, most Zambians live in poverty. All the more reason to pitch in and help this intriguing country!
A wonderful time in Africa
“When I got to Zambia and met the other volunteers, I was really astonished to find that they all only spoke English! It took some time to understand them, but after that things went more smoothly. I lived with Kerrie from Manchester in a bedroom for three people in the Livingstone volunteer house. I was definitely positively surprised – the accommodation was lovely! All of the projects were great fun too.
During the mornings, I taught a “special needs class” with 16 physically and mentally disabled children. That was sometimes pretty demanding, mainly because I had had no previous experience in this field. But it all went well. We drove to the project at 07:45 and were collected at around 11:30. Our midday break was from around 10:30 to 14:00, and we often went swimming in the pool, shopping or to the internet café. In the afternoons, I was allocated to different projects each day. Together with two other volunteers, I set up a reading club for children in classes 5 and 6 who have reading problems. This was so much fun that I continued to do this afternoon project for the remaining weeks.
There were up to 25 volunteers in our group – you can imagine that there was something to do every day. We often went out in the evenings – Livingstone has quite a few possibilities for going out! I visited Victoria Falls several times, did a canoe tour on the Zambezi and visited the smallest national park in Zambia. A very special highlight was a 5-day excursion through Zimbabwe. I can only repeat that I had a wonderful time in Africa!”
