Volunteer in Johannesburg

The north of South Africa is full of contrasts. From expansive savannahs full of roaming wild animals, to the largest canyon in the country, to lively modern cities, you can find just about anything here. Another contrast: both the richest and the poorest inhabitants of South Africa live in this part of the country.

Volunteer in Johannesburg: Project possibilities

Johannesburg Child Welfare, Soweto

There are several different volunteer projects in Soweto, a township near Johannesburg. The high HIV rate, poverty, and insufficient medical care are only a few reasons why the life expectancy in this part of the country is extremely low.

Children's Home Othandweni
Othandweni, which means “the place of love”, is a children’s home, which cares for 90 children up to age 18. Many of these children have been abandoned or mistreated, are AIDS orphans, or are themselves infected with the HIV virus and therefore require constant care.

Princess Alice Adoption Home
Abandoned children, pregnant women, and babies who have been given up for adoption find a temporary loving home in the Princess Alice Adoption Home. As a volunteer in Johannesburg, you will help by taking care of the children, playing with them, helping to cook meals and feeding the children, or doing simple maintenance work.

Orlando Child Welfare, Soweto

This children's home has existed since 1940, when it almost had to close due to a lack of funding. Today, the institution is predominantly funded through help from the state and donations. The home can take in up to 120 children, who stay in different houses, separated by age and gender.

As a volunteer in Johannesburg, you will help to create a comfortable and safe home for the orphaned children, plan exciting free-time activities, help with homework, and play with the children. Aside from this, you will prepare meals, offer assistance with hygiene, and care for the children, making sure they receive their daily needs.

Amazing Grace Children's Center, Malelane and Soweto

You can choose to work in a children's home in Malelane, located about 45 minutes from Nelspruit in a poor, rural area, or in Eikenhof near Soweto. In these projects, you will:

  • care for small children and adolescents,
  • prepare food and feed them,
  • help with homework,
  • play with the children, and
  • dedicate your time to them.

Many of the two homes' residents have been abused or abandoned, are AIDS orphans, or are infected with HIV themselves. They need a lot of attention. In both homes, that's just what the children receive, along with access to medical care, education, and a safe living environment. As a volunteer in Johannesburg, you may also do simple construction or maintenance work at the project sites.
