Volunteer work in Ghana

You’re interested in Ghana but more than the average tourist? You want to get into the country and culture and still visit the tourist attractions – the wonderful bathing beaches, nature parks and wild animal reserves? As a volunteer, you‘ll experience the deepest insights of Ghana between 2 and 6 months.

Volunteer work in Ghana: orientation days on location

At a glance

  • Age: 18 years and above
  • Duration: 2 to 6 months
  • Language: Good knowledge of the English language
  • Starting dates: Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month

As soon as you land in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, our local partner organisation will welcome you. Over the following days, you will get to know Ghana and its culture during your first excursions and through comprehensive information. These orientation days should help you to get used to the local conditions, the people and, often underestimated, the blistering heat! At the same time, you will receive important information on the following topics:

  • Health
  • Food
  • Traditions
  • Work
  • Travelling within Ghana

In addition, you will learn the basics of Twi or another language spoken in Ghana. At the end of the orientation period, you will be brought to your project location.

Living and travelling

The programme includes accommodation – first in a hostel in Accra with breakfast. Later, during your volunteer work, you’ll be staying with a host family, who will provide you with meals. Sometimes the projects offer accommodations of their own. You will be living in typical local conditions, so be prepared that you might not have running water and electricity. You should plan some time and money for travelling.

Ghana is a wonderful, almost untouched country – tourism is still in its early stage of development. You should be prepared to enter a completely new cultural region that is far less developed and organised than in European countries.

  • Lifestyle
  • Meals
  • Behaviour
  • Culture

These everyday encounters are often immensely different compared to Europe. Sanitary and provisions facilities are often very basic and often not available 24 hours a day. As a volunteer, you must show a lot of adaptability, self-sufficiency and an open-minded attitude towards life and culture in Ghana.
