With its unbelievable diversity of landscapes, languages, animals, and cultures, South Africa is one of the most fascinating and adventure-packed destinations in the world. The country is famous for the variety of animal species in its wildlife parks, expansive beaches, and superb wines.

Experience the contrasting mixture of modern western and traditional African lifestyles as a volunteer in Cape Town, South Africa! Since the abolishment of apartheid, South Africa has experienced many changes, and has become a very interesting country to visit. When you volunteer in Cape Town, you can contribute to the development of the newly-democratic nation of South Africa.
Volunteer in Cape Town
Upon your arrival in Cape Town, you will be picked up at the airport and brought to the volunteer house, where you will stay in a shared room with other participants. During the first days before you begin to volunteer in Cape Town, you will explore this wonderful city and its surroundings. For example, you will tour Cape Town by foot, and you will go on a 3-day tour including Cape Point, the Winelands, a township, and Hermanus.
You will be provided with detailed information during the orientation days, on the following topics:
- Culture
- History
- Language
- Safety
- Medical care
- The political situation in the country
You will also learn more about your project work and will receive valuable travel tips. This will help to prepare you for the rest of your stay in South Africa. At the end of the orientation, you will be brought to your host family. In rare cases, volunteers are placed in accommodation at the project site. At your volunteer project, you will have the chance to put your motivation to work!
An enriching experience!
After you have worked for 5 or 9 weeks in your volunteer project, we will bring you back to Cape Town. The next day, full of rich cultural experiences, you will return to your home country, or continue your travels independently in South Africa.
Volunteer in Cape Town: Overview
- Activities: Depends on the needs of the project and your previous experience. You will work about 35 hours per week.
- Free Time: Usually two days a week. Not necessarily at the weekend.
- Duration: 5 or 9 weeks.
- Application: At least 2 months before departure. We are happy to receive applications much earlier than this.
- Starting Dates: Usually twice a month on Sundays, weekly from June through September. No starting dates in December. Education projects: At least once a month, not including March, June, November, or December. 2 Jan., 16 Jan., 6 Feb., 20 Feb., 3 Apr., 17 Apr., 1 May, 29 May, 10 July, 17 July, 24 July, 31 July, 7 Aug., 14 Aug., 21 Aug., 28 Aug., 4 Sept., 11 Sept., 18 Sept., 25 Sept., 2 Oct., 16 Oct. 2011. - Practical Experience: Not necessary for most of the projects, but it would certainly make your stay easier. Prior medical skills are required for work in the field of health.
- Other: Patience, independence, flexibility, adaptability, and personal initiative are essential, as is the capability to live in very basic living and working conditions. Travel experience will be an advantage as you volunteer in Cape Town.
