Experience the contrasting mixture of modern western and traditional African lifestyles as a volunteer in Cape Town, South Africa! Since the abolishment of apartheid, South Africa has experienced many changes, and has become a very interesting country to visit. When you volunteer in Cape Town, you can contribute to the development of the newly-democratic nation of South Africa.

Volunteer in Cape Town

Upon your arrival in Cape Town, you will be picked up at the airport and brought to the volunteer house, where you will stay in a shared room with other participants. During the first days before you begin to volunteer in Cape Town, you will explore this wonderful city and its surroundings.

You will be provided with detailed information during the orientation days, on the following topics:

  • The political situation in the country

You will also learn more about your project work and will receive valuable travel tips. This will help to prepare you for the rest of your stay in South Africa. At the end of the orientation, you will be brought to your volunteer project, where you will get to know the responsible project coordinator.

Now you can put your motivation to work. Your work will not only help your volunteer project - it will also boost your own personal development. As you volunteer in Cape Town, you will stay with a host family, which lives close to your project, or at the project site.

An enriching experience!

After you have worked either four or eight weeks in a volunteer project somewhere near Cape Town, you will be brought back to Cape Town. The next day, all the wiser for your experiences, you will fly back home or begin travelling on your own in India.

Volunteer in Cape Town: Overview

  • Activities: Depends on the needs of the project and your previous experience. You will work about 35 hours per week.
  • Free Time: At least two days a week. Not necessarily at the weekend.
  • Duration: 5 or 9 weeks.
  • Application: At least 2 months before departure. We are happy to receive applications much earlier than this. Please take into account that flights at about the time of the Fifa World Cup (June/July) are more expensive and will book out quickly.
  • Starting Dates: Sundays, at least twice a month, weekly from June through October. There are no programme starting dates in December. Many projects are closed during the long holidays from December through the end of January.
  • Practical Experience: Not necessary for most of the projects, but it would certainly make your stay easier.
  • Other: Patience, independence, flexibility, adaptability, and personal initiative are essential, as is the capability to live in very basic living and working conditions. A police background check is required. Travel experience will be an advantage as you volunteer in Cape Town.
