The French-speaking west African land of Burkina Faso is one of the poorest and least-developed countries in the world. The population depends on agriculture, though periods of drought turn the country into a landscape of dry savannahs.
Yet Burkina Faso is still known for the “don’t-worry-be-happy” mentality of its people. With very limited resources, the Burkinabès have managed to establish a culturally-diverse country, where many different races live together in peace.

Volunteer work in Burkina Faso
There are many opportunities for volunteer work in Burkina Faso. Generally, you will do volunteer work in Burkina Faso Monday through Friday, in the mornings from 7 a.m. to noon, and then again in the afternoons from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Financial means and qualified personnel are rare in Burkina Faso, meaning that every helping hand is gratefully accepted.
Most of the facilities and initiatives seeking volunteers can be classified as educational, social, or health projects, for example:
- Pre-schools and schools for older children
- Schools for the deaf and hearing-impaired, or for the blind and visually-impaired
- Children's day care centres
- Orphanages
- Hospitals
Participants doing volunteer work in Burkina Faso schools and in projects with children will teach lessons and supervise homework, support co-workers in the organisation and supervision of activities, and care for and feed children. In the field of health care, you will be caring for patients, weighing babies, and administering medication under professional instruction, as part of your volunteer work in Burkina Faso.
It is possible to be assigned to manual volunteer work in Burkina Faso. This volunteer work could include construction and renovation. Most of our projects for volunteer work in Burkina Faso are located in and around Ouagadougou, although a few volunteer work projects are in rural areas outside of Burkina Faso.
In order to reach your volunteer project each day, you will have the opportunity to rent a bicycle for about £2.50 (US$4 / €3) per week.
