The Spanish language course and your host family placement will make it easier for you to dive into Guatemalan life when you volunteer abroad in Guatemala. Our school is located in the centre of colourful Antigua, one of the most beautiful cities in Central America. The school building has a small garden and a café-bar, providing a comfortable, international setting for students.

You will have lessons with a private instructor for 1 to 4 weeks, with a total of 20 lessons per week before you volunteer in Guatemala. The one-week option is only available for participants who already have a good grasp of the Spanish language.

However, it isn’t all lessons - various activities such as excursions, films, and volleyball games are also available. As you volunteer in Guatemala, the school will remain your contact point, always happy to offer you advice and help. The language school also runs a small branch school in the small village of San Juan near Antigua.

Learn Spanish in San Juan

In San Juan, it will be easier for you to get to know the real Guatemala than in the more touristic Antigua. It is highly recommended that you take part of your language course here.
If you don’t speak any Spanish yet, we recommend that you extend your Spanish course for at least one extra week. Each extra week costs £ 145 (US$ 215 or 165 €), including the course, accommodation, and meals. Good knowledge of the Spanish language is very helpful as you volunteer abroad in Guatemala.

Volunteer abroad in Guatemala

• Activities: As a volunteer in Guatemala, you could be placed in an orphanage, children’s day-care centre, nursing home, or other local facility, where you will help with homework supervision, care, leisure time activities, simple teaching tasks, giving advice, renovation work, etc.
• Free Time: Usually at the weekend.
• Duration: 5 weeks to 90 days (extension to 180 days possible on location, for an additional price.)
• Application: At least 2-3 months before departure. We are happy to receive applications much earlier than this. Upon request, it is sometimes possible to sign up later.
  
• Starting Dates: Every Sunday. Project possibilities are slightly limited between the middle of December and January, as several of the facilities are closed at this time. The climate remains pleasant throughout the year.
• Practical Experience: Not mandatory, but it would certainly make your stay easier.
• Other: Self-sufficiency, flexibility, initiative, and adaptability are vital. Travel experience is an advantage.
