Work with Antelopes in South Africa: Sable Ranch
The Sable Ranch in South Africa lies on a tract of land, where you can volunteer to help the animals. Experience the southernmost country on the African continent between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This land is home to various impressive animal species, including elephants, rhinoceroses, buffalo, hippopotamuses, and lions.
Working with Antelopes in South Africa
Daily work
In the Sable Ranch antelope project, you will not only be working with antelopes; you will also be responsible for the daily feeding of the animals, taking account of the animals’ well-being and caring for sick animals, among other activities. Much of the work also does not involve direct contact with the animals, such as building and examining fences and laying paths.
Seasonal activities
You will have the opportunity to take part in various activities, depending on the time of year when you visit. In the spring, animals are captured and sold at auction to other private big game farms, animal reserves, and national parks which would like to increase animal populations on their lands.
- In mid-April, you can help out with the mass capture of buffalo. Several of these large animals are suited for sale at auction, while others are released onto the main farm land.
- Each week from April through May wild animals such as antelopes, zebras, kudus, nyalas, and impalas are captured for sale at auction. You will move from camp to camp in order to capture the animals at various points. During this time you will also clean out the animals’ holding pens, where they will be held until the auction, and you will care for and feed the animals.
- In June, the wild animals are sold at the game auction and sent to their new habitats on other big game farms, reserves, and national parks.
