Work Experience in Spain: Travel Stories

You can hardly daydream about a holiday in Spain without thinking of fiestas, siestas, sun, and sand. But instead of going on the typical Spanish holiday, why not experience Spanish culture from the perspective of a local worker? Gain work experience and improve your Spanish in a gorgeous holiday destination - in Andalusia, Costa Blanca, Majorca, or on the Canary Islands!

I now speak fluent Spanish

"I was placed in Jávea, Alicante, in a 4-star hotel. I worked nine hours a day, and in my leisure time I did a lot of things with my co-workers. I was a waitress – serving the guests and clearing or setting tables. In general, we did the same work as the regular employees. The job was quite varied: for example, I had to prepare the room service, prepare the menus for weddings, decorate, and speak with guests on the phone to verify orders.

I really enjoyed my time in Spain. I have achieved exactly what I had hoped for – I now speak fluent Spanish and have also met a lot of really good friends. I’d jump on a plane and fly back there any day!"

The most exciting months of my life...

I spent my time abroad in a beach hotel in Corralejo Fuerteventura, where I worked 5 days a week at reception. I had 2 free days a week and had so much fun. In these 12 weeks, I learned a lot, whether it was about various computer programmes, or simply about the Spanish way of life. These were the 3 most exciting months of my life. I met tonnes of people, who readily integrated me into their group.

My work day started at 8 a.m. with a delicious Spanish breakfast, and then I began my morning responsibilities: checking guests into and out of the hotel, processing reservations, talking on the phone (and all of this in Spanish), and then the day began. I had a lot to do with the Spanish guests, and was able to greatly improve my Spanish this way. I also learned to overcome stressful situations with patience. The hotel complied with the promised working times, and at 4 p.m. I was allowed to go home. At the end of my work day I had to prepare everything for the late shift and explain any changes (also in Spanish).

My time abroad was simply outstanding. There is nothing that I would change about it. I had many positive surprises, which I had never expected. TravelWorks and the Spanish partner organisation were very helpful when I had small problems.
