Working with Lions in South Africa

As the name slyly suggests, South Africa makes up southernmost point of the African continent. With its coastline stretching over more than 2500 km, it borders both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa offers so many opportunities for wildlife volunteers, so taking care of lions is just one of the exciting experiences that await you.

Working with Lions in South Africa

The lion conservation project is part of a long-term study carried out by the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria. The farm is increasingly used as an educational centre. Each year, thousands of school children visit the project to learn first-hand about wild animal conservation.

Working with lions in South Africa, you will be in very close contact to the animals, taking care of the lions' daily needs. For older lions, meat must be prepared, cut, and transported to the cages. The cubs must be fed with a bottle every 3 hours, meaning that you may have to do some volunteering at night. You will also have the chance to play and cuddle with the lion cubs. This is not something to be afraid of - baby lions are very sweet and a bit clumsy, making it a lot of fun to just observe their behaviour.

Many other types of work will also be on the schedule, including:

  • Cleaning the spacious cages
  • Supervising sick animals
  • Repairing fences
  • Assisting in the kitchen
  • Teaching school children about the importance of animal protection and about lions in particular

The lion project is also home to other animals, including over 130 types of birds, which you will also have the chance to care for.
