Help monkeys in South Africa
Track down animals, quietly observe wild beasts, help to cure little sick monkeys or identify what snake goes with what bite – dedicate yourself to the protection of Mother Nature in South Africa and explore a fascinating country as a wildlife volunteer.
It was brilliant!
“I was in a rehabilitation centre for vervet monkeys near Tzaneen in the province of Limpopo. From this family establishment, we went on excursions to Graskop, where they sold really nice, cheap African souvenirs, and where the Big Swing is located; to Krüger National Park; and elephant riding in the EFAF.
In Riverside the work began at 7 a.m. during the week and at 8 a.m. Saturdays. Every morning we were separated into groups of two or three, and each group had an assignment to complete. The work included:
- food preparation (for the monkeys, ostriches, ducks, and parrots),
- cleaning the clinic/quarantine-station/baby-cage (there were baby long-tailed monkeys inside),
- cleaning out ostrich enclosures and parrot cages, as well as mouse cages, and
- feeding the animals.
We were usually done with the work before breakfast at 9 a.m., so we would help other groups finish their work, or had free time to ourselves. We also had other work, like digging up fields, pulling weeds, and renovating volunteer buildings
It was brilliant!!! Travelling abroad without my parents or friends for the first time was the greatest thing I have ever experienced! I quickly made new friends and expanded my horizons with many different aspects of nature and environmental protection, as well as the world of animals. I also learned what teamwork and patience are all about and learned to overlook certain differences in mentality – punctuality, for example :-)".
