Working Holiday in Portugal
Portugal is a sun-worshipper’s dream, with its above-average number of sunny hours per year, and the country is also on top of its game in football. Aside from its climatic advantages and sporting triumphs, this western European land has much to offer foodies, night owls, and water sports-enthusiasts alike!
Working Holiday in Portugal
With help from our partner organisation in Portugal, we will arrange for you to be placed in a job in a hotel, country guest house with 3 to 5 stars, or restaurant, where you will usually be working in a multicultural team. Your prior work experience, language skills, interests, and especially the seasonal job availability in Portugal will ultimately determine your exact job placement for your working holiday in Portugal.
Typical jobs in which participants are placed include room service, general assistance, kitchen help, janitorial work, and bar or restaurant service. Work is usually very simple, and is suitable for unskilled workers.
Wages and accommodation in Portugal
Your working holiday in Portugal definitely won’t be boring – in the extremely season-dependant hotel industry in Portugal, summers are especially busy. During your working holiday in Portugal, you will work an average of 8 to 9 hours per day. For your work, you will receive at least 150-300 € per month, depending on the employer and your job position.
Your employer will also provide you with accommodation in a shared bedroom at the hotel or country guest house, or in a private apartment, including full board (3 meals a day). After work and during your two free days per week, you will have enough time to take tours, do sports, and enjoy other free-time activities with your new friends.
Work hours and free time
- Work hours: Usually 38-40 hours per week, usually shift work, including weekends and holidays. Your working hours will vary depending on the hotel, your responsibilities, and the season. You will often do shift work during your working holiday in Portugal.
- Free time: Usually 2 days per week (not necessarily at the weekend or on two days in a row).
- Activities: Room service, waiting tables, cleaning, kitchen help, bar-keeping, etc.
- Clothing: For many hotel jobs in Portugal, you will need to bring along appropriate clothing, or buy clothes once you are already in Portugal. Typical attire for hotel jobs in Portugal includes a white button-down shirt and nice black trousers/a modest black skirt. If your hotel job requires a uniform, the uniform will most likely be provided by your employer. Hotel jobs in Portugal require a neat and tidy appearance (for example, short hair for men).
- Specifics: You can provide us with your preferences regarding your job position and the region where you will be placed, but your exact placement for your working holiday in Portugal will depend on a number of factors, including your Portuguese skills and current hotel job availability. The type of work to which you are assigned may change from time to time. You will not be able to choose the geographical region where you will work. Please note that you will be working in a busy hotel during your working holiday in Portugal. This means that work holds priority over the improvement of your language skills.
