Travel stories Peru
Emerald-green mountain passes, bright Indio markets, centuries-old cities: Peru will seize your imagination the minute you arrive, and isn’t likely to let go until long after you've returned home. It’s no accident that this gorgeous country is one of the most popular tourist spots in Latin America. At an elevation of 3400 metres, the fantastic city of Cusco, your destination, lies nestled in the magnificent Andes Mountains.
I was in Peru, in Cusco. I had a great time, met lots of nice people, and learned to speak really good Spanish in the meantime. My work in the “La Recoleta” nursing home was great as well – I felt useful and had many interesting experiences. As temporary help, I did every type of work that they needed at the time. This included cleaning, making beds, and serving lunch. I spent roughly half of the time doing these jobs and the rest of my time was spent reading to the elderly people, talking to them, or giving them massages. Friday was always washing day, which was the most demanding. My entire time there was fun, as the staff was also very nice.
At the end of my 8 weeks of Spanish-learning and volunteer work, I travelled to Lake Titicaca. From here I travelled to Bolivia, where I spent an extra 3 weeks. After a short excursion to northern Chile, I headed back to Peru. Arequipa and Lima were my last stops before I flew back home to Munich.
