Volunteer Work in Mozambique
Mozambique was long burdened by a troubled past, but today things are on the mend. The Mozambican people have been busily constructing the economy and tourism in their land – and at an astounding pace! Come visit the coastal city of Vilanculos and do your part to help continue the progress which has already been made.
Volunteer Work in Mozambique
In the mornings, you will support the teachers in the local preschool, and in the afternoon you will volunteer in various projects. Volunteers usually work seven hours a day, Monday through Saturday. Exact working times depend on the different projects. You will have Wednesday afternoons and Sundays free.
Morning volunteer work in Mozambique
You will spend your mornings doing volunteer work in the local preschool, which is currently attended by about 70 students. There, you will work closely with the local teachers, helping to create lessons for the children, or possibly teaching a class independently. You should focus on promoting the children’s creativity through song, dance, art, and play. You can also teach the children a few English words, such as colours and numbers.
A translator will be at your side to help you, so you are sure to pick up some Portuguese or the local Xitsua language. Other work includes correcting homework, doing simple work in the school garden, preparing food, and maintaining the school building, making sure that the children have a nice learning environment.
During school holidays, you will volunteer in "Holiday Clubs", doing work similar to what you would do in the preschool. Days are not very structured, but there will be a lot of variety and fun.
Afternoon volunteer work in Mozambique
Your afternoon volunteer work in Mozambique will include many different responsibilities.
In the orphanage, which currently is home to about 15 children, you will care for the children, playing with them and giving them lots of attention. With the help of a translator, you will instruct the older children in English, teaching them basic vocabulary. You can also play sports with the children, as they are always excited about frisbee and football.
Additionally, you can help to build new homes for the local people. In 2007, Cyclone Favio left many people homeless, and to this day not everything has been repaired. To help out, you can assist in expanding the preschool, building new classrooms, or painting bright picture on the walls. The work can be strenuous, but you will be able to see what you have accomplished as you come into contact with the local people.
Several village residents in varying age groups meet for a local language club, in order to improve their English skills. As a volunteer, you will help the people improve their vocabulary through games such as Bingo or Memory, organise theme days, sing together, and practice business English with the advanced students.
In further projects, you will take care of renovation and maintenance work in schools, or help to clean the beach. With so many types of work to do, you just need to stay flexible, and you are sure to have a successful time volunteering in Mozambique.
