Volunteers in India: Himachal Pradesh
About 550 km from New Delhi, the small town of Palampur lies in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Dhauladhar, covered in snow even in the summer, and by lush green pine forests, Palampur will enchant nature and culture enthusiasts alike.
In Himachal Pradesh in India, just as in west Rajasthan, your volunteer placement possibilities lie in the fields of education, child care, health care, and hygiene. On top of this, volunteers in India can also work in projects for women and do renovation work.
All of the projects are in and around Palampur and are rurally-affected.
Education
- Teaching basics in English and mathematics
- Instructing the children in hygiene and cleanliness
- Preparing lessons
- Motivating children to go to school on a regular basis and encouraging playful learning
- Encouraging creativity (singing, playing, painting)
- Homework supervision and tutoring
- Offering computer lessons
Child care
- Feeding, caring for, and looking after children in daycare centres
- Supporting health care
- Organising and supervising recreational and/or sporting activities for children (possibly also for disabled children).
On top of this, volunteers in India may work in the following fields:
Women’s projects
Measures to improve the educational level and self-esteem of girls and women (for example, through computer or English classes).
Renovation work
Rebuilding, maintenance, and redecoration of schools, daycares, etc.
Volunteer projects require much flexibility from volunteers in India. Make sure you are open for various types of work, and show your creativity, ability to improvise, and personal initiative. You will be working closely with the local population, with other volunteers in India (usually), and with the employees of local non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
